Department of Horticulture & FP, Assam has participated in National Banana Festival organized by Govt. Tamil Nadu of India at Madurai from 21st July to 23rd July, 2017. The 3 day national Banana festival 2017 was held at Madurai Agricultural College and Research Institute of TNAU. The National research Centre for Banana, Trichy displayed 100 varieties collected from all over the country. Research stations under Tamil Nadu Agril. University had displayed different varieties of plants and planting materials developed by the university.
In the mega festival, department of Horticulture & FP, Assam has attended with 2 Nos. of departmental Officers and 8 Nos. of banana growers from Amlighat, Morigaon district .
The Assam stall a stall displayed banana varieties grown in the state viz. Jahaji, Malbhog, Amritsagar, Chenichampa, Kachkol and Bhimkol. The Assam Stall was one of the main attraction in the festival, which was visited by Ministers, senior Officials from Govt. of India, and different states . The richness of Bhimkol is widely acclaimed by the visitors after tasting tiny pieces offered by the exhibitors. Banana growers of Amlighat, under departmentally sponsored Farmers Producers Company have explained the stall visitors about the growing practices of Banana and also the organic way of production and natural ripening without use of chemicals. The Assam team was leaded by Sri HN Talukder, DNO(Horticulture), Morigaon.
